April 20, Mae Pa

This week we worked with 6 of last year’s photo students from Rays of Youth, the summer leadership camp of Help without Frontiers.  Help without Frontiers is a non-governmental organization, based in Italy and Mae Sot.  They provide hot lunches to about 3,000 migrant students every day, run a sewing workshop, computer training, music workshops,  and support several migrant schools in the area.

Our 6 students are now Rays of Youth staff and we are soooo proud of them!  In June, they will be taking cameras into Karen state, and passing on their photo skills to rural school teachers and students.

Nat and I bike the 6 kms from our house in Mae Sot to Mae Pa, which is pleasant at 8 am, but not quite so pleasant at 4 pm, on our return.  It’s hot season here, average temperature is 32-37 C and humid.  So we arrive home looking like wilted lettuce leaves; a cold shower and a beer seems to revive us just fine!

We went over lighting situations, shooting moving subjects, portraits, and how to keep your audience awake… (by asking them to be photographed while leaping off chairs).
