Out beyond Mae Sot’s Burmese market, down a wide dirt lane, populated by geese, a few cows, and of course, some dogs, lies the New Wave Learning Center, a neat compound of two long open-sided classroom buildings, a dorm, a kitchen and dining area and a football pitch.
5 boys and 5 girls sit quietly, waiting for the workshop to begin. We play a warm-up game, struggle over names, and hand out 5 cameras. Pretty soon it’s not so quiet anymore, and that’s a good thing!
We were very happy to see Sandar, now a teacher at New Wave. She was part of the MY STORY photo project in Mawlamyine last year. Now she was our indispensable go-to for everything from translation to explanation to workshop supplies.
These photographers really got into their shooting assignments!
Thank you to John Khai for introducing us to New Wave, to headmaster Zaw Htat, translator and super teaching assistant Le SAndar, and of course, the 10 enthusiastic participating photographers!
