2018 Projects

Good morning, Huong Phung!

It took 4 days to get from Mae Sot, Thailand to Huong Phung, Vietnam, but that included a day in Bangkok for paperwork.  From Hanoi we flew to Hue on Saturday, January 6, then drove to Dong Ha, where we met  our hosts, Tung, Van, and  head of office Dai from the MCNV (Medical Committee Netherlands Vietnam NGO). They made sure we had plenty of good coffee and food before driving us north to Huong Phung early Monday morning, January 8.  This small commune is in the mountains, 4 kms from the Laotian border.  Huong Phung has one main street, one guest house that doubles as a kareoke parlor (!!!!) and one delightful coffee shop.  There is a high-school, where we led the workshop, a primary school, and the ever-present large government building.

Plunging right in, with help from Dr. Lan, our translator, and Tung, we practiced names and started shooting.  The sun was warm, so we thought maybe we didn’t need to bring all those warm clothes….

8 of the student teachers came from 3 communes, between 40 and 70 kms away. Vuong was the vice-principal of the school.

Nine student teachers who will take what they have learned here and teach it to target audiences in their communes:  youth at risk, disabled youth, drug users, teen girls who are pregnant.  It’s quite a list!

We crammed the technical stuff: aperture, shutter speed, focus lock, depth of field, lighting, point-of-view, composition into the first 2 days so they could have time to develop photo stories of their own.  Here are some of their shooting assignments:

Surrounded by mountains, Huong Phung has cool, sunny weather where just a few kilometers away it can be rainy and windy!  Even with the sun, we did need those puffy coats.

Breakfast was a cafe latte from BWild the only coffee shop for miles, whose owners have a coffee farm, a small roaster, cable TV.  and two lovely daughters.  The older girl spoke very good English which she learned, she said, from TV.  Children do study English in school, starting in third grade.  On the walk to BWild, we bought our mid-day bahn my, fresh baguette stuffed with meats, onions, cilantro, and a mystery sauce.  This stand was the busiest, with school kids, workers, aunties, and grannies all buying breakfast!

Students spent the last day editing their photos into an exhibition.  As usual, this was done with no muss, no fuss!

Then they took us out for dinner and the mandatory group pictures.  So much good food!
